Project: Arcadia Village, Magnetic Island

Project Description:

Proposed refurbishment of the former Arcadia Hotel on a four hectare site with 218 new apartments in three storey blocks.

Once complete it will include cafés and restaurants including pavilions and alfresco dining on extended timber decks, bar, bottle shop, news agency, convenience store and other retail outlets.  Community arts gallery, day spa, gym, meeting & function room for residents will also be included.

New buildings will be designed to fit with the tropical climate and the style of existing buildings on Magnetic Island. Residential buildings will use architectural features such as suspended floors and shady decks. Retail areas will have a relaxed village marketplace feel. All buildings will use appropriate tropical, lightweight built form and include features such as shutters and open balustrades. Buildings will be predominantly three stories high with some two storey components to reduce footprint and provide interesting built form. The remaining existing cottages will be offered to community groups for removal.

The historic Hayles House will be preserved and restored. Remnants of the original Arcadia Surf Life Saving Club will also be preserved and one of the historic cottages may be restored, moved to the site and used in the landscape design.
