Project: Grande Pacific Greenmount, Coolangatta Project Description: The site, a beachfront location, provided inspiration for the building built form to resemble the soft outline of a sea shell. The development proposal included 3 separate towers catering for the different proposed uses, namely low and high care residential retirement use and resort residential permanent rental/owner occupier use. The towers would range in height from 14 to 27 stories and would accommodate a total of 380 apartments with 670 bedrooms. The principal towers were essentially planned around a segmented quadrant of a circle, radiating out from the central core. The curvilinear form of the balconies was intended to resemble the smooth weathered natural surfaces of headland and rocky outcrops, as opposed to a strong rectilinear hard edge treatment. The association with the curved forms was further enhanced by the sculptural forms of the porte cocheres, swimming pools, pedestrian street awning and pavilion roofs over the recreation areas. The North and East Towers sit comfortably over a 5 storey contrasting rectilinear podium structure, (mostly built below ground level), although its southern facade is articulated by the use of a louvre cladding arranged in opposing directions to create a deliberate departure from the form of the towers above. The Central Tower has an indoor hydro therapy pool (incorporated within the car park podium structure), as well as a home theatre and billiards room. Ample function rooms were designed, along with a residents' lounge, bar area and roof top entertainment area. The North Tower was designed with restaurant, shop and café uses on the ground level, along with a swimming pool and outdoor barbeque areas. A home theatre, gym, workshops and greenhouse with glazed roof were conceived within the confines of the car park podium structure. A sky garden lounge was provided on Levels 8 and 9. The East Tower has all the usual recreational facilities associated with a resort residential apartment complex, such as restaurants, café, shops, an indoor games room, a theatre room, an outdoor pool and barbecue areas and gym. |
