Project: Foy Residence, Indooroopilly

Project Description:

This renovated queenslander with a new extension was designed to make the most of breezes and natural light, with half window hoods, reverse blockwork and skylights. The shape of the extension mirrored that of the old house. The kitchen formed a common area connecting the two structures.

Ideas of dual occupancy were adopted in the design to allow for the future adaptations and the changing needs of the family. Both houses could be completely stand alone residences if needed.

The design introduced different construction ideas such as reverse blockwork, which has a fantastic
aesthetic appeal internally and also provides thermal mass. This means a 5C° temperature
difference between inside and out can be achieved.

Other environmental initiatives include:
  • Recycling windows in the new extension.
  • Use of the courtyard between the two wings to channel breezes.
  • Low toxic and low allergenic paint.
  • Plywood VJ walls instead of plasterboard internally.
  • Maximization of natural light through the use of skylights and innovative ‘half hoods’ over the windows. These hoods have a segment cut out of the cover to let in adequate light while still providing shade.
Overall the design achieves a happier, healthier and a more productive environment.
