Project: Beach House, Stradbroke Island Project Description: This house was built on a ridge high above the beach at Point Lookout. The client brief was for a modest sized and priced dwelling that capitalized on the spectacular ocean view. The challenges were to give every habitable room a view, to construct on an unstable sandy slope and to detail for corrosive salt spray. The solution was a split level floor plan developed to allow rooms at the rear to look over and around the front rooms. The living areas were gathered around and opened onto a dramatic cantilevered deck. Deep screw piles were driven vertically and perpendicularly into the sandy slope to provide stability for a heavy steel substructure. This technique minimized site disturbance and saved expensive excavation and footing costs. All steel work was hot dip galvanized after fabrication, stainless steel was powder-coated and timber was finished with a marine grade clear finish.
