VIRET
Viret represents a breakthrough in the implementation of Ecologically
Sustainable Development for residential living in South East Queensland.
Featuring cross flow ventilation, open living spaces, eco friendly
materials, water and energy efficient services and an integrated
landscape approach, Viret offers the latest in sustainable apartment
living.
No need for a car here, as secure bike storage, easy access to bikeways
and near by train and bus services all encourage you to minimise
your transportation impact on the environment. Recycle your waste in
the communal recycling facility or feed your organic waste in the
vermiculture station.
Viret offers options to enable you to do the right thing by our
environment. Natural lighting to all internal spaces means you don’t
have to rely on artificial lighting, solar power reduces your power
bills and your thermal comfort can be naturally or artificially
achieved under your control.
Existing site vegetation was retained to enhance Viret’s natural
character and ‘Living Walls’ assist in reducing the heat load to the
building fabric.
This project set benchmarks in the development approval phase as
Brisbane City Council’s Sustainable DA Team worked with the project
team to achieve many of Viret’s unique features. Site secure breezeways
and access ways ensure all units benefit from Brisbane’s sub tropical
idyllic climate.
Viret has evolved from the 2003 World Environment Day Sustainable
Apartment prototype assembled in Brisbane’s King George Square to
demonstrate how sustainable apartment living can be practical and
achievable. Low toxic finishes, recycled materials, sustainably sourced
cladding and flooring all make up Viret’s unique living environment.
“We all have a responsibility to reduce our impact on this planet and
address the environmental problems our society has created. The
strategies adopted in the development of Viret quantifiably reduce the
environmental impacts such a project creates. It provides solutions for
ongoing water and energy conservation, offering its occupants practical
solutions for living sustainably”.
It is hoped all future residential developments address environmental
issues as comprehensively as the Viret project. “I have no doubt that
the public will choose Ecologically Sustainable Development once they
have a choice to distinguish it in the marketplace”. Sustainable living
options will be embraced by the general public which up until now has
not had many sustainable apartment choices.
