Grand Hotel

THE BRIEF
The original historic Grand Hotel IN Gladstone was constructed on the site in 1896 with the building being refurbished in 1911 and recognized as a local landmark. This building was almost totally destroyed by fire in 1993. The client’s brief was to reconstruct the building utilizing the partial historic façade and restoring the building’s original streetscape.

THE SOLUTION
Through the use of old photographs and research into the materials, construction techniques, façade and architectural treatments of the late 1800’s an authentic recreation of the original façade was achieved. The internal configuration of the building was to be designed to accommodate a 300 seat function room, four bars, restaurant, lounge, gaming and bulk liquor sales areas. The architectural treatment and interior design of the essentially new building was to also reflect the original era while catering for today’s lifestyle.

THE OUTCOME
The completed hotel while clearly restoring the original character of the “Grand Hotel” thus satisfying the aspirations of the client, patrons, local authority and the community but also achieved the functionality and facilities of a modern hotel. The design, documentation and reconstruction was completed and the hotel was operating less than 18 months after the devastating fire.
